By 2025, the Internet Water Army alone comprises more than 280,000 people paid to flood social media with comments designed to shape public opinion. This industrialisation of manipulation affects markets worldwide. In the e-commerce and retail sectors, the most common form remains the fabrication of fake consumer reviews: in France, ‘dubious reviews’ could account for nearly 45% of all reviews, according to the DGCCRF (the French consumer protection authority), a figure that reveals the systemic scale of the problem, well beyond isolated misconduct.

The Profile of Orchestrators and the Sectors at Risk

Astroturfing can be exploited by anyone, for any purpose, and on any subject. This universality is precisely what makes it so dangerous. The orchestrators fall into three broad categories: corporations seeking to improve their image or harm competitors, lobbying groups seeking to influence public policy decisions, and state actors seeking to shape political opinion. The manipulation of information through astroturfing, already present in military and advertising circles, has taken on unprecedented proportions with the rise of social media and has become pervasive in the political arena. The Samsung affair stands as a well-documented and telling example: in 2013, in Taiwan, the South Korean company used astroturfing to attack competing product HTC One, by having Taiwanese students pose as spontaneously disappointed consumers on popular forums. In response, the Taiwan Fair Trade Commission fined Samsung USD 340,000, citing the company’s payment of individuals to write fake reviews. The lesson is clear: the risks are financial, reputational, and judicial.

The Psychological Dimension: Why It Works

The effectiveness of astroturfing is no accident. Findings from psychometrics, neuroscience, and sociology serve as the architectural foundation for campaigns and bots alike. The algorithms integrate mechanisms identified by these disciplines: information propagation speed, cognitive biases, the impact of moral and emotional language, repetition effects, and the creation of false memories. The human brain is naturally inclined to trust numbers: when one perceives that a majority has adopted a given opinion or behaviour, the natural tendency is to align with it. Astroturfing exploits this conformity bias with increasing precision, fabricating the illusion of consensus where none exists. Conviction is not derived from rational argument, but from a carefully simulated mass signal, which makes individual resistance particularly difficult without robust media literacy education.

Generative AI as an Accelerant: When Astroturfing Goes Industrial

Generative artificial intelligence represents a qualitative and quantitative leap without precedent. The sophistication of available tools now makes it possible to produce deceptive content at an exponential speed and at marginal cost, rendering traditional defences obsolete and posing unprecedented challenges to companies’ marketing and communication teams.

LLMs at the Service of Coordinated Disinformation

Large language models (LLMs) are radically transforming the relationship between effort and output in the conduct of astroturfing campaigns. A single operator can today generate hundreds of comments, reviews, or posts in a variety of tones, across multiple languages, adapted to the stylistic conventions of each platform, in a matter of minutes. State actors and digital platforms are increasingly leveraging generative AI to produce hyper-realistic content and manipulate public opinion. These tactics aim, for example, to influence elections, spread disinformation, or undermine trust in democratic institutions. Beyond political stakes, the same technological arsenal applies to brands’ commercial and reputational concerns, with equally devastating effects. The primary disruption introduced by LLMs is the disappearance of the linguistic signal: whereas yesterday’s fake reviews could be identified by their clumsy or repetitive phrasing, content generated by GPT-4 or its equivalents now achieves a fluency indistinguishable from that of a native human speaker.

Deepfakes and Brand Identity Theft

The threat takes on an additional dimension with deepfake technologies. According to a 2024 study by Ironscales, 75% of companies report having suffered at least one deepfake-related incident in the past 12 months, yet only 20% have adequate measures in place to deal with it. Leaked or stolen personal data is used to train an LLM to mimic an individual’s knowledge, personality, and writing style. Deployed in combination with falsified video and audio content and compromised biometric data, these digital twins can deceive close associates, colleagues, or partners in identity fraud schemes. For marketing directors or community managers whose voice is publicly identifiable, this technology opens up the possibility of total impersonation: fabricated positions, fictitious partnerships announced, controversies manufactured out of thin air. Faced with a systemic and technologically sophisticated threat, brands have an arsenal of responses combining organisational vigilance, technological tools, and a legal framework. Building effective resilience against astroturfing requires an integrated approach structured around three levels: detection, prevention, and response.

Detecting astroturfing campaigns relies on the identification of abnormal behavioural patterns. Indicators to monitor include sudden and unexplained spikes in mentions, suspicious stylistic homogeneity across ostensibly independent reviews or comments, recently created accounts with unusually high publication frequencies, and an artificial semantic convergence around specific terms or narrative angles. Guillaume Sylvestre, Director of Digital Intelligence at ADIT, identifies two distinct profiles in astroturfing operations: ‘alphas’, who initiate the message, and ‘betas’, who amplify it via satellite accounts. Recognising this network structure is a key detection mechanism. At the institutional level, the DGCCRF has deployed an algorithmic tool called ‘Polygraphe’, capable of analysing language patterns, publication frequencies, and geographic origins in real time to detect organised opinion manipulation campaigns. Brands can draw inspiration from this approach by integrating social listening tools capable of generating real-time alerts on statistical anomalies within their digital ecosystem.

The Legal Framework: Rights and Obligations of Brands

The regulatory landscape is progressively taking shape, providing companies with concrete legal tools. In France, a ‘fake review’ is punishable by a fine of up to EUR 300,000 and two years’ imprisonment. The company itself risks a fine of up to 10% of its annual turnover. These sanctions apply to the perpetrators of astroturfing, but they also send a strong signal regarding regulators’ sensitivity to this issue. Regulation 2022/2065, known as the Digital Services Act (DSA), which came into force in 2024, imposes strict obligations on platforms regarding the removal of illegal content and cooperation with authorities. The best defence against astroturfing remains the construction of a genuine trust capital, sufficiently dense and deeply rooted to withstand manipulation attempts. In the face of rising disinformation and fake news, community managers must redouble their vigilance to protect their brand’s reputation and provide their audience with verified information. Training one’s community to recognise and report false information can be essential. This defensive strategy rests on several pillars: the regular production of sourced and transparent content, a rapid-response policy for narrative crises, authentic community engagement that creates a base of ‘genuine voices’ difficult to drown out under artificial noise, and a consistent editorial line that makes impersonation more easily identifiable. A brand that maintains an ongoing relationship of trust with its community possesses a resilience capacity that astroturfing campaigns struggle to sustainably erode, provided this relationship is maintained with consistency and professionalism.
